🔐 Windows Hello PIN Disable Guide

How to Remove Your Windows Hello PIN — Windows 10 / 11

If you’re planning to change BIOS or Windows security settings such as TPM / fTPM, Secure Boot, virtualization, VBS, or Hyper-V, it can be useful to make sure you know your Windows account password and, if needed, remove your Windows Hello PIN beforehand.

Note: Removing the PIN is not normally required for every BIOS change. TPM-related changes are the ones most likely to affect Windows Hello authentication.

1️⃣ Open Windows Settings

Open the Start Menu and click ⚙️ Settings.

Or press:

Windows Key + I

2️⃣ Open Accounts

Inside Windows Settings:

  1. Select Accounts
  2. Open Sign-in options

You should see available login methods such as:

3️⃣ If the Remove PIN Button Is Greyed Out

Sometimes Windows does not allow you to remove the PIN because Windows Hello-only sign-in is enabled.

Scroll down in Sign-in options and turn OFF:

For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device

⚠️ Important

After disabling this option:

  1. Leave the Sign-in options page.
  2. Open another Settings page, such as Accounts.
  3. Return to:
Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options

This refreshes the page and the Remove button should now become available.

4️⃣ Remove the Windows Hello PIN

Under PIN (Windows Hello):

  1. Click Remove.
  2. Click Remove again to confirm.
  3. Enter your Microsoft account or Windows account password.
  4. Confirm the removal.

✅ Your Windows Hello PIN should now be removed.

5️⃣ Before Changing BIOS Security Settings

Before changing settings such as:

make sure you know your normal Windows account password.

⚠️ Important for TPM / Secure Boot Changes

If BitLocker or Device Encryption is enabled, BIOS or TPM changes can sometimes trigger a BitLocker Recovery screen.

It is a good idea to save your BitLocker recovery key before making major TPM or Secure Boot changes.

✅ Re-enable Windows Hello PIN

Once you’ve finished making your changes, you can add your PIN again.

Go to:

Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → PIN (Windows Hello)

Then click:

Set up / Add

Follow the prompts to create your new PIN.

💡 Quick Tip

If your PIN stops working after changing TPM-related settings, select:

Sign-in options → Password

Log in using your account password, then recreate your Windows Hello PIN from Settings.
